What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the study of a specialized system of hard (bone) and soft tissue (gingiva) that
supports the teeth and maintains their position in the jaw.

This set of tissues is called periodontium, and the main function of the periodontium (gum tissues) is
to hold the teeth in their position inside the bone.

How can this tissue be maintained, affected or treated?

Maintaining the health of the gums are through routine dental visits, every 6 months, to remove the
plaque accumulated under the gum and on the teeth through Dental Cleaning.

Leaving the plaque accumulation grow around the gum and teeth lead to Gingivitis, which is a
common and mild form of Gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness and
swelling (inflammation) of your gum. Bleeding when brushing teeth is one of the signs of Gingivitis.
Moreover, if this disease appears and is left untreated, it will lead to Gum disease, in which the gums
start to recede and the bone starts to be resorbed, this will case high sensitivity of teeth, pain and
lead to teeth mobility and lastly, loss of the teeth.

Treatments of these affections at early stages are as a simple as a dental deep cleaning, while in
severe cases the treatment would be as complex as bone & gum augmentation surgeries.
